"In essentials, unity; in nonessentials, liberty; in all things, charity." ... early Disciples motto
The Corydon Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was founded in 1833, less than two years after Barton W. Stone and "Racoon" John Smith, meeting in Lexington, Kentucky, merged two similar endeavors to bring Christianity to the western American frontier. This merger was accomplished with the simple handshake of Barton Stone, representing the reform movement called "Christian," and John Smith, representing "Disciples." Thus began our Corydon congregation's parent denomination "Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)."
